Day of Railwaymen was established on June 25 (July 6) 1896 in memory of the Emperor Nicolas I birthday, as the Emperor was the one, who made it possible to create first railways in Russia. 120 years ago minister for transportation prince M. Khilkov established a new holiday, Day of railwaymen.
This was the first professional holidayof railway workers in Russia. it was chosen to celebrate the holiday on the June 25 (July 6)- anniversary of Nicolas I birthday, tsar in the time of establisjing of first railways in Russia. For all railway premises this was the day off. Festive dnner had been held at the Pavlovsk railway station near St. Petersburg. At all large railway stations and terminals solemn prayer services were held.
This day was celebrated up to 1917.
Day of Railwaymen
On July 30 1936 it was decided to celebrate Day of Railway transport of the USSR.
In 1936 Soviet government decided to celebrate Day of Railway transport of the USSR. Initially July 30 was choosen as a celebration date, because in 1935 on this day delegation of railwaymen asked Stalin to establish the celebration. In 1940 the date was moved to the first Sunday of August. Since 1980-s the celebration is called the Day of railwaymen. Since 2003 the date is a corporative event of JSC RZD

On August 1 1991 the railway rolling stock museum was opened near former Warsaw railway station.

115 years ago, on September 11 1901the traffic on the Latitudinal Railway of Moscow-Vindava-Rybinsk line with route Shahovskaya-Novosokolniki-Zilupe Due to export trade growh, tsar Nicolas II by his Order from March 2 1897 demanded to establish shortest reloading-free way from old capital to ice-free Baltic ports - Vindava (now Ventspils) and Riga. In September 1901 road exploitation from Riga railway station to Kreuzburg (Now Krustpils -Latvia) was started. the same day, September 11 1901 festive opening of Vidava raiway terminal in Moscow took place.

70 years ago on September 23 1946 Ministry of transportation ordered to create departments. Great Patriotic War ended with victory over Germany and Japan. Soviet people after heroic liberation of the world returned to peaceful life. According to decree of Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union from September 19 1946 No 2143 and order of Ministry of transportation No 652/Ц from September 23 1946 "On establishing if railway departments..." it was prescribed to establish 274 departments on the railways network in two-month period. On October railway there have been established 12 departments:Moscow, Bologoe, Leningrad-Moscovskiy, Khvoynenskoe, Leningrad-Finlyandskiy,Novgorod, Leningrad- Varshavskiy, Leningrad-Vitebskiy, Dno, Vyborg,Pskov.

70th anniversary of departments establishment
October 1916- 100th Anniversary of the Great Siberian Way (Transsib)
In 1915 builders had finished eastern part of Amour railway and the pass-through from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok was opened. After the end of bridge across Amour in October 1916 Transsiberian railway become uninterruptible. To provide shortest way From St. Petersburg to Vladivostok it was decided to built a line from St. Petersburg to Vyatka trough Vologda.
100th anniversary of Great Sibirian way (Transsib)
In 2016 we elebrate 60th anniversary of the last steam engine locomotive, made in the USSR in 1956.
